Sinks and Plumbing
Over a century ago,
plumbing was a word that people did not know. There
was no indoor plumbing in people’s homes. They
depended on having a water source close to the
house. It was necessary for people to leave their
home and walk to the water source. They would fill
pitchers or basins because there was no indoor
plumbing.
When sinks and indoor
plumbing were finally developed, not everyone had
it. It was still very new and very expensive.
A sink with indoor plumbing was considered a luxury item
for a very long time. Sinks back then can be
compared to cable television when it first came
out. Not everybody had it because it was
expensive.
It was considered a
luxury item. Now, twenty years later, cable
television is affordable and to some people necessary in
life. The same was true with sinks. When
indoor plumbing was first invented, it was not very
affordable.

Plumbing
Plumbing is the term for all of the pipes located both under
the sink as well as under the ground. The pipes are what
brings the water from the water source to your sink. It
also takes water from your sink’s drain to the water collection
site. It is very important that your plumbing.
Sinks
All sinks, no matter what type, are all used for the same
purpose. To wash things or to get water for
something. Whether it is a bar sink or a kitchen sink,
they have the same purpose. The way you take care of your
sink can easily affect the way that your plumbing works.
Plumbing: Before you Call your Plumber, You may be able
to do the Job Yourself
If you have a problem with dripping faucets, it is not
always necessary to call a plumber. There are some things
that you can fix yourself. A plumber will charge you at
least $75 just for walking in the door. Then his hourly
fee will begin along with his labor fees. You could end
up with huge fees and the job could easily have been done by
you.
The dripping faucet is usually caused by wear on one or more
parts of the faucet. Since there are so many different
faucet types and so many different ways to turn the faucet on
or off, the components are different, the worn part could be
anywhere. If you have a standard two handle sink, there
is a standard fix for this. In cases such as this a worn
washer or O-Ring could be the problem. It could also be a
worn valve seat. You can check these things before paying
a plumber.
Another job that does not require the assistance of a plumber
is certain drain clogs. If your drain gets clogged, you
can sometimes fix it yourself. Sometimes it is simply
just the drain trap. It is very easy to go underneath the
sink and empty the drain trap.
There are some blockages that can be cleaned as well.
Sometimes, all a drain clog needs is a good plunging.
Another thing you can try is a liquid drain clog remover.
These are sold in supermarkets and hardware stores. All
you do is pour the liquid down the drain. If you have
tried the liquid and the plunging, then you can call the
plumber.
Preventing Clogs: Things that you can do
It can be very costly if you develop a clog. If the
plumber has to come out to your home, this can get very
expensive. If you do not want to spend hundreds of
dollars on a plumber, it is wise to follow certain rules so
that you do not get clogs. One very important way of
preventing clogs is not putting grease down the sink.
As enough grease gets in the drain, it can cause a build up
which can sometimes be too much for the store-bought liquid
drain openers. Another way to prevent clogs in your drain
is to avoid pushing food down the drain. Unless you have
a garbage disposal, it is not a good idea to push any kind of
food down the drain.
This can cause the food to stick in the drain. If it gets
bad enough, you will need a plumber to come in and “snake” the
drain. To snake the drain means that the person must
force a thin pipe don the drain. This will help unclog
the drain as whatever is stopping the drain will come out as
the thin pipe pushes it through. The other method of
preventing clogs is to watch what small children put down the
sink. Small toys can become lodged into the drain.
They can become so lodged in fact, that it could take the
skills of a plumber to get it out.
Without plumbing and sinks, people would have a difficult
time doing many things. We take indoor plumbing for
granted. People in third world countries still do not
have indoor plumbing. It is important to keep pipes
working properly.
